Sri Ganga Parameshwari Temple, Yelahanka
To trace the history of this old, famous and most people worshiping deity, Sri Gangaparameswari and its Temple at Yelahanka, needs to know that Nadaprabhu Hiriya Kempegowda, also known as Kempegowda, was a chieftain under the Vijayanagara Empire. He is also known as the founder of Bengaluru in the 16th century. A descendant of Morasu Gowda lineage, Kempegowda is considered one of the most educated and successful rulers of his time. After taking permission from the Vijayanagar emperor Achyutharaya, he built Bangalore Fort and the town in AD 1537, and shifted his capital from Yelahanka to the new Bengaluru Pete. The people of Yelahanka town, used to worship the water - Godess “Gange” at Yelahanka lake, which covers more than 380 acres. During the heavy rains in the catchment area, the water in the lake used to overflow and get wasted, so the people of Yelahanka, during that time prayed the Goddess Ganga to stay in the lake to stay back in the lake, stop spill-over and bless the farmer, so as to grow their crops. During that time, a grand festivity celebrations are conducted in a grandeur manner all through the tank bund of the lake. During this festivity, the people celebrate Shiva, Gange - ‘ Kalyanotsava’, along with ’Deepotsava’ and ‘Theppotsava’ celebrations. There was a belief that, on new moon night, devotees saw a Jyothi (Light) in place where current temple is located (in the middle of the town), then our ancestors decided to build a temple and that was built in the year1939, with a deity of Sri Ganga Parameshwari Devi. As the temple was small and very old in the recent days, it was rebuilt in the year 2004. This is said to be one of the biggest Sri Ganga Parameswari Temple in Karnataka, and may be in the whole of South India.
